about

Every once in a while, a record comes along out of nowhere that changes the game. Prank Sinatra’s “Get Outta My Way” is one such record, and it is quite possibly the best psychedelic pop record to come out of the Philippines in recent memory. In the world of Prank Sinatra, sugary-sweet pop hooks coexist with surf guitar and segues into psychedelic freakouts, and it makes perfect sense. In a way, this is pop music deconstructed. The record teeters on the edge of chaos, but it holds itself together with Iman Leonardo acting as the ringleader to this crazy circus.

“Get Outta My Way” is a hard record to pin down, but it’s definitely a Prank Sinatra record through and through. For Prank Sinatra fans, this is familiar territory. However, the record also proves to be accessible enough for new listeners while maintaining the band’s penchant for experimentation and clever songwriting.

Prank Sinatra has proven time and time again that they’re one of the most original bands in the country and resorting to comparisons when talking about their music can prove to be a daunting task. From the catchy opener “Flimflambeau” to the guitar-heavy closer “Konan D’ Barber-o”, the record is a pastiche of everything from country music to 60’s pop, garage rock, and indie rock. And it works, which is a testament to Leonardo’s skills as a songwriter.

“Get Outta My Way” is another notch in Prank Sinatra’s highly consistent discography. The band treads familiar ground, but they do it on their own terms and that has always been Prank Sinatra’s appeal for me.
